STOCKTON - The Fashion Department at San Joaquin Delta College is producing a two-day design extravaganza, showcasing the amazing design talent of the students in the Fashion and Interior Design Programs:

PART ONE: A STORY OF…DESIGN (Friday, May 6, 2011)
PART TWO: A STORY OF…FASHION (Saturday, May 7, 2011) 

This two-part event will begin on Friday, May 6 with Part One: A Story of Design, an exhibit held on the Delta College campus that will be free and open to the public. The event runs all day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This annual exhibit features the work of students in the areas of Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design.  Students will display their talents and creativity in specific fields such as fashion design, accessory design, fashion illustration, fashion advertising, cultural and ethnic costume, visual merchandising, and interior design. The Interior Design projects will include a “real” project: a redesign for a Nissan car dealership!

There will also be displays of entries in two competitions: White T-shirt Redesign and the Eco Design Challenge, as well as two exciting and unique LIVE fashion design competitions: the Garment Redesign Challenge and the Visual Merchandising Competition.

The Garment Redesign competition will feature teams of students taking garments from local thrift stores, tearing them apart, and redesigning them into new garments within a two-hour time frame. Contestants will also have a limited amount of additional fabrics, buttons, and trims to aid in their designs. The second live challenge is the Visual Merchandising competition. In this one-hour challenge, teams of students will be given a space, mannequin, props, and a theme to create a “window display” out of these select materials. The public will be able to watch the challenges live, as they unfold, then vote for their favorite finished design.

In the T-shirt Design competition, students will be asked to take ordinary white t-shirts and redesign them into a variety of things (from fashionable tops to skirts to handbags and bikinis).

The Eco Design Challenge features garments designed with unconventional materials that the public generally discards, such as paper, bottles, cans, and garbage bags. Contestants will be asked to construct a garment out of “trash” or recyclable materials. No fabric will be used in the process. 

The public will have an opportunity to view the designs and vote for their favorite T-Shirt Redesign entry! The static competitions will be on display throughout the day. The Garment Redesign Competition will happen live from 1- 3:30 p.m. and the Visual Merchandising Competition will be live from 2-3 p.m. The public can vote on these once the competition is over and the winners of all of the challenges will be announced at 4 p.m.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter drawings to win some amazing gift packages, such as a 50-person wine party to sports tickets to Obagi skin care products and digital cameras. Donations for these packages are provided by Stockton Thunder, Main Street Café, Renew Hair and Body Lounge, Bella’s Bridal, Rio City Café, SJDC Bookstore, Caroline Photography, AVE on the Mile, AMC Theaters, Buffalo Wild Wings, Gnekow Winery, Fashion Safari, Cocoro Sushi, and more!

The Exhibit and Live Competitions will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011 in Danner Hall on the Delta College Campus from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

In addition to the exhibited displays, attendees will have the opportunity to talk with the student designers, view information about the Fashion and Interiors programs at Delta, and learn more about a variety of creations from current students, as well as students who are now working in the fashion and interiors industries. There is no admission charge and the event is open to anyone interested in attending. 

The fashion program has a history of amazing student success, with students who go on to be designers, magazine publishers, retail store managers and educators. Graduates include Lodi HS graduate Jennavave Barbero, who graduated from Delta and California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She moved to NYC shortly after graduation and designed for BCBG, Ellen Tracy and Calvin Klein, as well as other brands. She is now living in Milan, Italy teaching fashion design. Billy Hutchinson also graduated from Delta and the SF Art Academy and is now the Asst. Manager of Gump’s luxury department store in San Francisco. He also owns his own line of luxury stationary and papers. Riley John Donnel, who was in the program briefly, went on to become the owner of Surface Magazine in San Francisco and is now involved with the men’s wear brand, Nice Collective. This is just some of the amazing talent that has passed through the fashion program at SJDC.

The students in the program have many opportunities to learn about the industry, from events like the annual Meet the Industry Insiders, where prominent industry experts come to Delta to share their wisdom, to the annual New York Fashion Industry Tour. This year’s New York Fashion Tour is set for June 6. This year, students will be meeting with influential professionals in the industry from such companies as Ralph Lauren, Henri Bendels, Kate Spade, Rootstein Mannequins, Trend Union Forecasting Company and so much more. In past years, the students have had the opportunity to meet and speak personally with top designers in the business like Kenneth Cole, Tory Burch and Betsey Johnson. They have had intimate one-on-one workshops with trend forecasters and color specialists and with designers for Calvin Klein, Banana Republic, Trend Union and Michael Kors. They tour the most upscale stores like Henri Bendel’s and Bergdorf Goodman, speaking with visual merchandising teams who design award-winning windows, client services directors who work with the most exclusive clientele in the world, and buyers who select from thousands of lines each season for their eclectic and exclusive inventory.

Leslie Asfour, who has been conducting the tour for 10 years, has extensive contacts in the industry, and custom-designs the tour to include appointments with friends and family in the fashion business, including her cousin, the lead designer and founder of the design team of THREEASFOUR. Their collections are shown on the exclusive second floor of Barney’s in New York, a coveted place for designers. THREEASFOUR’S designs can be seen on the cover and inside jacket of Mariah Carey’s CD, The Emancipation of Mimi, as well as on countless celebrities and in Vogue, ID, and Paper magazines. Their circle handbag was part of a collaborative design concept for Opening Ceremony, based on the movie Tron.

Asfour works hard to put the trip together and provide the students with experiences that will resonate in the careers and for the rest of their lives. “The trip is an invaluable experience for the students. They have the opportunity to meet with the leaders in the fashion business, and are able to go into the design rooms of the major designers in America, meet intimately with trend forecasters and fashion recruiters, and see the fashion world from a vantage point that others rarely have the opportunity to see. They take away an education that cannot be provided in the classroom.”

The Fashion Program at Delta is exceptional. The program boasts the most equipped sewing rooms in education, with over 60 sewing machines of industry-quality for students to use. The program also has computerized patternmaking software, plotters, wide-format textile printers, state-of-the-art pressing centers and more. The instructors all come with industry experience. Asfour possesses over 23 years in the fashion and interiors industries, working for companies like Cache, CP Shades and Express in the Bay Area, Western Contract Furnishings in Sacramento, and owned her own boutique in Stockton for several years before coming to Delta to head the programs. She still consults for many retailers and manufacturers on product design, retail store design and marketing and advertising.
