Delta College Trustee Janet Rivera & Bipartisan Latino Policymakers Address Needs of Latino Students

San Joaquin Delta College Trustee Janet Rivera joined Latino public officials from across the nation at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) National Taskforce on Education in Washington D.C. (May 21-22). Over 13.6 million Latino students (ages 5-21) are currently enrolled in American schools. The NALEO Taskforce representatives will discuss the impact of sequestration and strategies for improving Latino student success with members of Congress and the Obama Administration.

New Stockton Public Works director appointed

Stockton, CA  - Gordon MacKay, the interim and deputy director of the Public Works Department for the City of Stockton since December, 2001, has been selected as Stockton’s Public Works director, effective January 1, 2013.  Mr. MacKay has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia with an emphasis in water resource and municipal engineering.  He has 30 years of combined experience in infrastructure design and construction, traffic and transportation, and teaching and management experience.

Honorable Willie Lewis Brown, Jr. is an American icon of the Democratic Party. He served over 30 years in the California State Assembly, spending 15 years as its Speaker, and afterward served as the 41st two-time Mayor of San Francisco.

The Honorable Willie Brown firmly believes Mayor-elect Anthony Silva will fight for this city and its residents.

All residents are welcome to witness the Honorable Willie Brown swear-in Mayor-elect Anthony Silva this Tuesday, January 8th.

California farmers worry about farmworker shortage

California farmers worry about farmworker shortage

More than 60 percent of California farmers said they had a difficult time hiring enough workers throughout 2012, according to a survey by the California Farm Bureau Federation.

Among farmers who grow labor-intensive crops (tree fruits, vegetables, table grapes, raisins and berries) 71 percent reported employee shortages.

City accepting applications for Planning Commission

The City of Stockton is currently accepting applications for four (4) Planning Commission appointments for City Council Districts: 2, 4, 6 and at-large.  The Councilmembers-elect for these districts and the Mayor will make the nomination for full Council consideration in January. The deadline for applications is Thursday, January 3, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.

The Planning Commission is made up of seven (7) members, each member nominated by the Councilmember representing the district they represent; the Mayor nominates an at-large candidate.  All applicants must reside in the same district as the appointing Councilmember, with the exception of the Mayor’s appointee.  Applicants must not hold any other elected position or position of employment with the City of Stockton.

The Stockton City Council was looking for a replacement for Councilwoman Susan Talamantes Eggman, who was elected last week to the California Assembly.

The new councilmember will serve out the remainder of Eggman's term and will represent Council District 5  through Dec. 31, 2014.
