Blind pug robbed by diabetes struggles for surgery

Blind pug robbed by diabetes struggles for surgery

SACRAMENTO, CA -- A Sacramento pug rescue group is reaching out to animal lovers in hopes of providing a much needed surgery for one of their precious pugs.

Eight year-old Mija (Mee-ha) is a playful pug who loves to snuggle. She was rescued by PugSavers, a Northern California pug rescue group, after her owner, who loved her dearly couldn't afford special care for her diabetes. Mija's foster family has been taking great care of her until she finds her forever home, but recently her condition has worsened causing blindness in both of her eyes.

It has been recommended by a specialist that both of Mija's eyes be removed to help with her diabetes and alleviate what has now become a painful condition.

Waggin Tails' Readers program available at Cesar Chavez library

STOCKTON - Children of all ages and abilities will have a chance to practice their reading skills and build their reading confidence by participating in the Waggin' Tails Readers at the Cesar Chavez Central Library.

In this program, children read aloud to a trained therapy dog (and his adult volunteer) and, in the process, improve their reading abilities. Adult volunteers will read, with the therapy dogs, to children too young to read on their own. Children who participate in ten Waggin' Tails Readers sessions will get a free book!

Waggin' Tails Readers is being presented by Arc San Joaquin, and made possible through a grant from Junior League of San Joaquin County.

Waggin' Tails Readers will be held every Saturday (began June 4), from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. in the Children's Program Room of the Cesar Chavez Central Library, located at 605 North El Dorado Street.

Ports to host Bark in the Ballpark May 22

STOCKTON - Get out your leash and give your best puppy-dog eyes! You are going to want to walk your human down to Banner Island Ballpark on Sunday, May 22 for Bark in the Ballpark 2011 sponsored by B92Nine and Sunny 102 FM!

Dogs get in to the ballpark for free when they arrive with a human in possession of a ticket for the Sunday, May 22 game. Ports Pooches receive the royal treatment all game long, beginning as soon as they walk through the gates on the first base side of the ballpark, starting with a special dog food giveaway for all the pups in attendance.

Dogs will take in the action along the right field line, in designated doggie sections 117-121; one of the best areas in the ballpark to catch a fly ball! Dogs will also have the opportunity to participate in several in-game promotions and activities, including a pregame doggie parade!

Bark in the Ballpark is not just a day for the dogs however!
