With the 2016-2017 school year upon us, preparing our students to start off strong is a necessity that must not be overlooked. School supplies and school clothes are definitely great but if we neglect to help our students become more self-aware, we'll be making a tragic mistake. Business genius, Gary Vaynerchuk says, "Self-Awareness is the game...when you know yourself, you win". I like to say, "When you know yourself, success is more easily attained. As the father of a 1st grader, 8th grader and 9th grader, I desire for my children to be successful. As the oldest of 7 brothers and sisters, I want my younger siblings to be successful. As a #StudentSuccessCoach of 15 years, it is a need for me to see our students start this year off with more confidence than ever before and be extremely successful.

August is Toy Train Month at the California State Railroad Museum

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation are proud to recognize August 2016 as Toy Train Month, an annual celebration that focuses on the Thomas W. Sefton Gallery and “Small Wonders: The Magic of Toy Trains” exhibit.

In recognition of Toy Train month, 14 toy cabooses from the Museum’s impressive collection will be introduced – for the first time – in the crowd-favorite “Small Wonders” exhibit, one of which is quite rare. Prized Caboose No. 2129 was manufactured between 1908-1913 by Voltamp Electric Manufacturing Company, is blue in color with gold painted lettering “B&O” and “2129” and pin striping on both sides, has an 8-window cupola, and features other eye-catching detail sure to capture the interest of dedicated toy train collectors and casual enthusiasts alike.

Back by popular demand, the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) will offer a fun and interactive booth at the California State Fair (July 8-24, 2016) in an effort to showcase the variety and diversity of offerings available in our region. State Fair guests are invited to imagine, explore and discover more about local museums and destinations at the visually-exciting Sacramento Museums booth that will be located in Building B (southwest corner).

In addition to providing helpful information about the nearly 30 SAM member museums, the Sacramento Museums booth will include a number of hands-on activities every day that include the following:
Guests can experience what it’s like to sit in a F-16 Pilot Procedures Trainer provided by the Aerospace Museum of California;

Railroad museum invites guests to celebrate Dad on Father’s Day weekend

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation invites guests to celebrate dad on Father’s Day weekend with memorable steam train ride and even first-class service aboard an air-conditioned vintage lounge car on June 18 & 19, 2016. All weekend long, guests can enjoy excursion train rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad pulled by the recently restored and popular vintage steam locomotive Granite Rock 10.

Steam train ride guests delight in the sights, smells and sounds of an authentic, historic locomotive as it rolls along the levees of the Sacramento River for a six-mile, 45-minute roundtrip excursion. Appealing to all ages, the experience offers guests the chance to enjoy train travel from an earlier era. The train features a combination of vintage closed coaches with comfortable seats or VIP train ride experiences onboard the Museum’s beautifully restored first class El Dorado lounge car.

Every year there are many Asian celebrations with roots from South Stockton, each featuring a distinct culture – the Chinese New Year Parade and Festival, the Cambodian New Year Celebration, the Obon Festival, the Barrio Fiesta, Hmong New Year to name a few.

This Saturday, June 6, the cultures come together in an Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration known as Hand in Hand which is a collaboration between the Central Valley Asian American Chamber of Commerce (CVACC) and the Haggin Museum.  The event takes place at the Haggin starting at 12:30 pm.  See the schedule below:
